Are you confused about how to use Marseille Soap for laundry? Here’s the breakdown.
Replacing laundry detergent
Using Soap Flakes (find them directly from our store or grate your Marseille Soap with a cheese grater or a knife) in your home is the perfect way to transition to a healthier lifestyle. Hypoallergenic, without perfume, additives, preservatives, colors and biodegradable, you’ll be able to delicately clean all your textiles.
Ingredients: (For 1 L of detergent)
-25g Soap Flakes
-1L Hot Water
-1 Teaspoon baking soda (optional)
-10 Drops of essential oil of your choice (optional).
How to: Place Soap Flakes in a large bowl. Pour hot water (not boiling) and mix until the flakes are dissolved. Let the mixture cool down. Add the baking soda & essential oil (optional). Pour the final mixture in an empty bottle.
Use 200 ml (a little less than 1 cup) of the mixture with your (full) washing machine. Make sure to shake vigorously before use if the mixture has been sitting for a while (the soap could have separated from the water).
Pro tip: If you’re washing with water above 40 °C, you can skip these steps and add your desired amount of Soap Flakes directly into the drum (you can even add a block of Marseille Soap without grating it).
**We recommend to avoid direct contact with the heat or using microwave as this may alter the texture of the mixture.**
For delicates (by hand)
Due to its hypoallergenic properties, Marseille Soap is ideal for delicate laundry (silk, wool, satin…) and is suitable for very sensitive skin (babies, eczema, pregnant mothers…).
Ingredients:
-25g Soap Flakes
-5L Hot Water
How to: Dissolve Soap Flakes in the hot water. Use this solution to wash your laundry then rinse thoroughly. Remember to use cold water for wool materials.
Removing pesky stains
Back in the day, if French washerwomen used Marseille Soap everyday for their laundry, it’s because it removes stains like nothing else. Butter, oil, coffee, chocolate, mustard, blood, you name it. Also highly effective in getting rid of collar stains!
How to: Dampen the stain as well as your Marseille Soap with cold water. (Beware: Do not use hot water as it could fix the stain in the heart of the fibers.) Then rub the stain with the soap and let it soak for a few hours, making sure you have built up a nice concentration of soap on your textile. Wash by hand or throw it in the washing machine for a flawless result!
